MLK Day, 2024
Today we celebrate and commend the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.: a man of God, a man of peace, and a man of justice. His vision, his charisma, and his leadership united all who believed that America, established in 1776 as a land of the free, should at last live up to its ideals. Inspired by Scripture (John 1:5), Reverend King preached, “Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Reverend King's passion for justice and dedication to nonviolence united patriotic Americans of all colors and backgrounds - blacks and whites, Protestants and Catholics, Jews and Gentiles - to stand and march peacefully against hatred, injustice, and inequality. Reverend King's 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech, delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. as a sermon to believers of all faiths, galvanized a generation of Americans to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Though he was assassinated four years later, at the young age of 38, the power of Reverend King's words and ideals still resonate with us today - proof, once again, that darkness cannot overcome the light, for the power of love and the divine peace of which he spoke are from heaven. And now, when our great nation is endangered by a world divided by hatred, violence, and war, we must remember and rededicate ourselves to continuing Reverend King's victorious struggle for unity, justice, and peace. Let us join hands as Americans and celebrate this historic day with family and friends, as we honor G+d for delivering His message of peace and justice through our great brother, the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.
